What is Cosplay?

Hello! Some people cosplay as a part of their lives and this cosplay section will be used for sharing information about cosplay and even some tips as to how to cosplay. Feel free to comment about your thoughts or if you think there are any areas for improvement :>

Cosplay (コスプレ kosupure), short for costume play, is a performance art in which participants, called cosplayers, wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea that is usually identified with a unique name. This is usually done as a hobby.

Favorite sources include manga, anime, comic books, video games, and films. Any entity from the real or virtual world that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Inanimate objects are given anthropomorphic forms and it is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa. There is also a subset of cosplay culture centered on sex appeal, with cosplayers specifically choosing characters that are known for their attractiveness or revealing costumes.

Cosplay costumes vary greatly and can range from simple themed clothing to highly detailed costumes. Cosplay is generally considered different from Halloween and Mardi Gras costume wear, as the intention is to replicate a specific character, rather than to reflect the culture and symbolism of a holiday event.

Because of the difficulty of replicating some details and materials, cosplayers often educate themselves in crafting specialties such as textiles, sculpture, face paint, fiberglass, fashion design, woodworking, and other uses of materials in the effort to render the look and texture of a costume accurately.Cosplayers often wear wigs in conjunction with their outfit in order to further improve the resemblance to the character. This is especially necessary for anime and manga or video game characters who often have unnaturally coloured and uniquely styled hair.

In order to look more like the character they are portraying, many cosplayers also engage in various forms of body modification. Contact lenses that match the color of their character's eyes are a common form of this, especially in the case of characters with particularly unique eyes as part of their trademark look. Contact lenses that make the pupil look enlarged to visually echo the large eyes of anime and manga characters are also used. Another form of body modification that cosplayers engage in is to copy any tattoos or special markings that their character might have.

However, Cosplay in Singapore is not as common as overseas due to Singapore having a conservative society. Cosplay is often deemed as “weird” or “strange” and it is even frowned upon at times.

This is because Singapore has a conservative society with a very traditional mindset. Most Singaporeans start to judge people who are "different", and let's not even talk about cosplay, just a teenage girl in casual clothes with neon pink hair will cause many eyes to end up on her, and it's not in a good way. Cosplay not only requires the person to wear a coloured wig, but also bright coloured contact lenses, dramatic make up, unique costumes, and might also include special props, and these are extremely alien to the majority of Singaporeans. Furthermore, the fact that there are many cosplayers with disruptive behaviors out there worsen the impression of cosplay on the public, and therefore, it is frowned upon :(

  2. Wow this is indeed a good read about Cosplay =) Yeah I agree to the part that cosplay in Singapore is uncommon. The cosplay community in estimate has only about 1000++ cosplayers. However, I feel that cosplayers from the cosplay community can do something to spread this wonderful pop culture =P As a cosplayer myself, I make it a point to put my best efforts into my costume so that I can create a good impression and encourage people to join the cosplay community. Furthermore, I really enjoy the process of making my own costumes and I believe others would too. And as for Singaporeans who are hesitating whether to join this pop culture, theres no need to be afraid or anything: In a coslay event, everyone is equal =) We share the same passion and hobby =)

    1. Thank you :) Yup it's uncommon but it's growing~ and yes i agree with you about the part where cosplayers can actually spread this culture. However, most people cosplay just because they enjoy the attention and a lot of them create a negative impact on the public by behaving inconsiderately :< So despite the attempts of cosplayers to try to make people accept cosplay, people still do not accept cosplay as easily :/

I have to agree, Singapore is not a suitable place for cosplaying. Think about it, the recent events of a CHC member condemning a cosplayer. Even in other countries do they not even do that. I used to cosplay in the past, but well it is reallyyy expensive that it always burns a hole in my pocket so i stopped ~

I'm glad you agree with me. Yep, sadly, Singaporeans are extremely judgmental :( YES. COSPLAYING IS EXPENSIVE :< and that is why I tend to cosplay only once in a while and only characters that I really love. I also cosplay certain characters multiple times to make the best out of my costumes :>
