A Different Perspective On Sports~

Today I am going to talk about a whole new perspective on a sporty lifestyle in Singapore. Basketball is one good sport which we discussed about. The comments telling me how other different sports like Baseball make a good team sport and is similar to basketball too.

But today, let's take a look at another kind of sport to lead a nice sporty lifestyle in Singapore. The sport is the more calm type. A type of sport which sometimes doesn't seem like a sport because of how slack the sports look from the outside. The sport which I am going to use as an example is also a sport which I take part in quite frequently this year. It is Archery.

What is Archery??? :D

Archery is a sport which is easily misjudged from its cover. I know this because I've had that perspective of these kind of sports before. I used to think shooting on the boards for hours and hours is lame. In fact, even as I am writing this now, I guess it already sounds lame to you guys.

But like I've mentioned, archery is a sport which is easily misjudged from its cover. The truth is the excitement and fun comes quite simply. Archers may seem to be lacking of teamwork and always solo-ing and shooting alone. But please allow me describe where our fun comes from.

Archery is a team sport. But it works in the background. We help each other by guiding each other giving tips to shoot better. After a round of shooting, we spend time resting and building relationships chatting with friends and new friends. We can shoot for hours a day so you can imagine the amount of time we have to build our relationships. Yes, it may sound boring. "Building relationships? What?? So boring... :(". But chatting with new friends is always a fun thing.

Personally, I've made a nice group of friends in my new social circle from joining the Archery CCA in my polytechnic school.  Archery is more popular among polytechnics and universities in Singapore. And that means it usually only exists in clubs.

The real exciting part comes from the part where the arrows hits the boards. We see our skills getting showcased in front of us. Best part is if we hit a bulls eye. It is simple, but very exciting. Which is why archers train to shoot and hit that bulls eye everytime.

Overall, Archery is more like a friends hangout sport kind of thing. It is not easy to aim accurately, like other sports, it requires time to perfect it. But the main part is how nice the feeling is to aim well, and how time is well spent making friends and bonding with one another.

So what do you think of archery after hearing all this?
Once again, I would say that you can't really gain much excitement just from reading my introduction of Archery and my experience. You will have to experience it for yourself.

I know this is definitely true for most of you, that you still think it's not going to be fun. But I STRONGLY urge you, just try for a day. Learn the basics. I know the majority of you will take a liking to it :)

Thanks :D

  1. If there is an archery anywhere then go for it! In US, not a lot of schools have archery at all, for my school it is limited to one physical education class that isn't required to be taken. Always wish to do archery since I was a kid because it looks cool XD

  3. Archery actually interests me greatly. I only participated in the sport a couple times in the past, and it was really nothing serious. However, in the future, I hope to take up this sport as possibly a hobby and even a passion of mine. I've always watched the movies and played the video games, with archers and hunters being able to hit targets hundreds of meters away with dead accuracy. As you stated, hitting "bullseye" would certainly feel very rewarding, and the overall atmosphere of holding a bow and being able to shoot what may be a deadly and accurate arrow is what "turns me on" the most about this sport! I may just be too fantasized by the things seen in movies and video games :p

This sport relates greatly in my opinion to shooting. Taking a rifle or pistol and aiming at targets, specifically vital organs or "bullseye" targets is also very challenging but rewarding. However, archery provides a different feeling because most of the mechanics of using an automatic weapon such as a gun are not required because the weapon itself does most of the work. On the other hand, the bow and arrow require exceptionally trained individuals to be able to use them effectively.

Let's not forget about teamwork! As you stated in your post, the sport is very fun when you challenge or compete against other individuals such as your friends, or even if you guys are just playing for fun. Helping each other improve and just enjoying yourselves is like any other hobby, such as playing video games, or playing any other sport such as basketball!

I certainly will try out this sport more in the future! Your post has really got me to reflect about this sport in a deeper way, and has motivated me to try out things I didn't really think of trying before :D
